Rising from the ashes of the incredibly raw Hellhammer, (whose Apocalyptic Raids is now considered to be the first real black metal album), Celtic Frost easily pushed higher the limits of where metal could go.  It's interesting to me how now Frost is considered the progenitor of the whole black metal scene, since back when this was new stuff, we didn't know what it was, just that it was fucking heavy.  Pretty much every song is a classic here, hampered somewhat by today's standards by the production, but if you can get past that (and easily all of Norway's black metallers can), then you will experience one of the true classics in metal.  At every turn Frost bent the rules, but this is the darkness where it all began.
Noise has re-released most of the Frost albums, Morbid now containing The Emperer's Return E.P. which features Reed St. Mark's first appearance on the drums.
